Contact Rules
The information below is based on the majority of sports, but is not necessarily accurate for every sport at the Division I level. If you participate in the sport of basketball, football, ice hockey, or gymnastics, then you should refer to those sport-specific rules.
Division I:
- Freshman and sophomores may only receive admissions information, camp brochures, and questionnaires.
- In most sports, student athletes can officially begin to receive recruiting materials (letters, emails, handwritten notes) on September 1st of their junior year. The date is June 15th for Men's Basketball and Men's Ice Hockey.
- In most sports, student-athletes can receive one call per week starting July 1st after their junior year. This rule varies for football and basketball.
- Official visits are allowed in all sports beginning with opening day of classes for your senior year.
- Off-campus contact such as in-home visits and meetings after a competition during your senior year are only allowed a certain number of times during the year. They are only allowed during a Contact Period. They are not allowed during Dead, Quiet, or Evaluation periods. These dates vary greatly by sport.
Division II:
- College coach can begin sending recruiting materials beginning September 1st of the student-athletes junior year.
- Coaches can contact the student-athlete by phone once per week after June 15th of their junior year.
- You can make official paid visits starting the opening day of classes your senior year.
Division III and NAIA:
- Student-athletes can receive recruiting materials at any time during their high school year.
- There is no limit on the number of calls, or when a college coach can make them.
- You can make official paid visits starting the opening day of classes your senior year.
***A student-athlete can contact a coach via email, mail, or telephone at any time. The contact rules are designed to protect you as a recruit.
